Retirement Banner Ideas: What to Write and Where to Hang It

A retirement banner has two jobs. It says a short line guests can read from across the room, and it hangs where they see it as they walk in.

What to write and where to hang it, in brief

Lines by tone

Adobe Express says the banner should reflect the retiree's personality, profession and passions. Write the line the way you would say it in the room. These are examples to adapt, with the name swapped for theirs.

Tone Use it when Lines to adapt
Classic You want the line everyone knows Happy Retirement, Sam · Congratulations, Sam · Happy Retirement & Thank You
Warm You know them well Cheers to Your Next Chapter · We'll Miss You, Jordan · Thank You for Everything
Funny They will laugh at the job Officially Off the Clock · Bye-Bye Alarm Clock · Gone Fishing · Retired: Ask Me Tomorrow
Career The work is the story Thank You, Nurse Pat · Class Dismissed, Mr. Lee · Mission Complete · Final Shift Done
Next chapter They have a plan Tee Time All the Time · Adventure Awaits · Now Boarding: Retirement
Family party The guests are family, not coworkers Welcome to Grandpa Time · Hello Weekends Forever

Count the letters and numbers before you print. A doorway string stays readable when the line is a name plus a few words. Save a long paragraph for the card.

A photo belongs on the banner when guests will recognize the face from a few feet away. Adobe Express treats personal photos as part of that personal banner.

Where to hang it

  1. The doorway, or the wall guests see as they walk in. The string spans the opening, so the line is the first thing they read.
  2. Over the cake table, where people gather for photos and the toast.
  3. Above the gift table, when that is where people stop and the doorway is already dressed.

Skip a hallway nobody lingers in. The banner works where people pause under it.

How to hang a string, and how to hang a one-piece banner

String or pennant banner. If it already has a hanging string, Party Ideas by a Pro says to attach that string directly to the hooks. Command's picture-hanging strips are made for frames, and its instructions keep them off paper, so use hooks for a pennant string.

One-piece banner with grommets. UPrinting's indoor method is to loop string, zip ties, or clips through the grommets and hang that from adhesive hooks, following the hook maker's steps. Party City's plastic confetti banner is 65in long and is sold as easy to hang indoors or out. That describes their product, not which wall to use.

Weight and surface. Command rates poster strips at 1 pound, designer medium hooks at 3 pounds, and a large hook at 5 pounds. Match the package rating to what you are hanging. A lightweight one-piece poster can use the poster strips; a string of pennants hangs from hooks. Command's FAQ says to use the right hooks, clips, or strips for the decoration weight and surface. The same FAQ keeps those products off wallpaper, brick, and rough concrete, and off heavily textured surfaces.

Weigh the finished string before you hang it, and stay under the rating printed on the package.

The pennant set you can print

The Happy Retirement Banner is a letter-per-pennant garland for the cake table or a doorway. It includes HAPPY RETIREMENT on 15 letter pennants, two per sheet, with cut lines and punch-hole marks, plus sunrise pennants, blank pennants to letter by hand, and photo-frame pennants. It takes any phrase up to 60 characters in the offline personalizer, one pennant per letter or number, with spaces as gaps, and up to four photos. It prints as a PDF on US Letter or A4, and you bring a printer, scissors, a hole punch and string or ribbon. It is a digital download: nothing is printed or mailed.

The banner is the piece people photograph. The rest of the room is the entrance, the gift table, and the food table, which our retirement party decoration ideas plan spot by spot.

Questions

Can I make my own retirement banner?

Yes. Cut letter pennants from card stock, punch a hole in each, and string them, or print a pennant set and string that. A shop banner is a one-piece sign you hang as it comes.

What should I write in a retirement banner?

The retiree's name and a short line in the tone you would use in person: warm, funny, or a nod to the job. Happy Retirement works when you want the classic.

What should a retirement banner say?

Something a guest can read from across the room. Name, a short wish, and stop. A long paragraph belongs on a card, not on the banner.

What photo should I use on a retirement banner?

A recent photo where the retiree's face is clear and large enough to recognize from a few feet away. A group photo works when the retiree is easy to spot.
